Thank you all for praying!  It really means a lot.

Read a quote today:

"Knowing God without knowing our own wretchedness makes for pride.
Knowing our own wretchednes without knowing God makes for despair.
Knowing Jesus Christ strikes the balance, becauase he shows us both God and our own wretchedness."
- Blaise Pascal

Just spoke with my mom.  She experienced chest pain at work few weeks ago.  She went to see a cardiologist and they are doing some test on her.  She sounded really down on the phone...really worried but trying to not show it.  But I can tell.

If you happen to remember, could you please pray for her?  Her name is Kathy.  She doesn't know Jesus yet.  But I know that Jesus loves her deeply and desires for her to experience His comfort, love, and salvation.

One of my favorite worship songs is: "Nothing But The Blood" by Matt Redman.  I was reading for class today and ran across Hebrews 12:24, which says:

"...to Jesus the mediator of a new covenant, and to the sprinkled blood that speaks a better word than the blood of Abel."

Ahhh, so this is where Matt Redman got it from!  No wonder it resonates with my soul!  The idea of blood speaking is not uncommon to scripture.  In Gensis 4:10 God says to Cain, the brother and murder of Abel:

"What have you done? Listen! Your brother's blood cries out to me from the ground."

The blood of Able cried out from the ground for vengence on his killer.  Jesus' blood also speaks.  But it speaks "a better word".  His blood doesn't cry out for vengence.  Instead, His blood cries out for mercy and forgiveness!  His blood speaks on our behalf!  It speaks righteousness and justification for us!!  While Abel's blood sought to shut out the wicked man, Jesus' blood opened the gates of heaven for the wicked men and women.

"...if anybody does sin, we have one who speaks to the Father in our defense--Jesus Christ, the Righteous One.  He is the atoning sacrifice for our sins, and not only for ours but also for the sins of the whole world." (1 John 2:1-2)

The righteousness of Christ Himself, imputed to me!  I can't think of a greater incentive for me to walk and to live in purity, holiness, and righteousness; and for me to announce to the WHOLE WORLD that Jesus is the atoning sacrifice for their sins!

Your blood speaks a better word
Than all the empty claims I've heard upon this earth
Speaks righteousness for me
And stands in my defense
Jesus, it's Your blood

What can wash away our sins?
What can make us whole again?
Nothing but the blood
Nothing but the blood of Jesus
What can wash us pure as snow
Welcomed as the friends of God?
Nothing but Your blood
Nothing but Your blood, King Jesus

Your cross testifies in grace
Tells of the Father's heart to make a way for us
Now boldly we approach
Not earthly confidence
It's only by Your blood

Last week Nanci and I went on a romantic getaway to San Diego! It's been over 10 years since either of us saw Shamu, so we thought that we'd swing by to say "hi".  We stayed at a little hotel across the stree from Old Town San Diego. The room was small, but clean...and it fits in our budget!  That first night we had great Mexican food!

The day after we visited Sea World we drove to Coronado Island and saw plenty of fancy hotels that we would never stay at in this lifetime.  As grand as these hotels look, they are nothing compared to the room in the MANSION that Jesus is preparing for me when I get there!  We found a place to park our car and went for a walk on the beach.  As we walked by Hotel Del Coronado (probably the fanciest hotel in Coronado with nightly rates as high as $650/night) Nanci told me that she needed to go to the bathroom.  And since we were standing by Hotel Del Coronado, we decided to go in to use their bathroom.  People were walking in and out anyways...we just had to make sure that we look like we belong.

After using their restroom we decided to check out their pool.  Just as we were being facinated by how fancy their pool was, a lady walked through the pool gate that required a hotel key to open.  It was the perfect opportunity, so we followed the lady through the pool gate and into the pool area.  We thought to ourselves: So this is what the rich and famous live like!

We ended up spending a good part of the day sitting by the pool on a couple of very comfortable padded beach chairs, reading a book, talking, and watching wealthy people walk by.  We even helped ourselves to the free apples and oranges that they had!  Ok, so maybe I should feel a little guilty...but not really!  It was FUN!  We got to enjoy all the benefits without paying the price!  What a way to vacation!

As I reflect on that fun day at Hotel Del Coronado, I thought of the passage in Hebrews 6:4-6 where it says:

It is impossible for those who have once been enlightened, who have tasted the heavenly gift, who have shared in the Holy Spirit, who have tasted the goodness of the word of God and the powers of the coming age, if they fall away, to be brought back to repentance, because to their loss they are crucifying the Son of God all over again and subjecting him to public disgrace.

Some people have taken this passage to mean that we can lose our salvation.  I have to admit that this is a difficult passage.  But there are simply too many other passages which clearly states that we cannot lose our salvation (Jn 6:37, 10:27-29; Eph 1:13-14; etc.)

What this passage is doing, it seems, is giving a strong warning that it is very possible to be enlightened by the gospel truth, to share the benefits of fellowship, to enjoy the love of a Christian community and still NOT be truly regenerate or saved.  This is exactly the picture of Nanci and I as we were hanging out by the pool at Hotel Del Coronado, enjoying the amenities and benefiting from the facilities and services without being real hotel guests.  From an outside perspective, no one could tell us apart from other the REAL hotel guests!  We looked and acted just like everyone else!

The tragedy is that there are people who are members of local churches, enjoying all the benefits of belonging to a small group and a loving community, listening to the gospel truth preached week after week, but still are not true followers of Jesus.  Looking like a follower of Jesus, acting like a follower of Jesus, and talking like a follower of Jesus doesn't make you a genuine follower of Jesus.

Have you fallen on your knees in despair because of the depth and wretchedness of your sin?  Have you been overwhelmed by the depravity and utter wickedness of your own heart?  And have looked to Jesus as the Lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world, who died on your behalf by taking upon Himself ALL of your sins, and who imparts to you His own perfect righteousness?

Nanci and I just got back from the Talbot Marriage Retreat.  We had such a wonderful time!  It was a great weekend of reflection and connection for us.  It's hard to believe that we have been married for almost 7 years.  So that means we have known each other for 10 years!  That's a third of my life!

As I reflect upon the past 10 years, I realize that I am MORE in love with Nanci NOW then I have ever been in the past!  I can honestly say that at this point in our marriage, we have a deeper, more affectionate, and more meaningful relationship than at any point in all the previous years.

Ten years ago I met Nanci at a friend's birthday party.  It was my 4th year at UCLA and Nanci had just transfered in from PCC also as a 4th year student.  I quickly realized that this was someone that I enjoyed talking with.  She is genuine, sincere, caring, and has a realness about her that I really admire.  And over the next 2 years, through being in the same Christian Fellowship at school, we went from being acquaintances, to friends, to good friends, to great friends, and finally, to the best of friends!  When we became the best of friends, I also knew that this is the one person that I CANNOT live WITHOUT for the rest of my life!

I wanted to communicate to her that I would like to take our friendship to the "next level".  But I didn't want to use the term "girlfriend" since that term has become so vague and so meaningless.  So, to make sure that she's clear on what my intention was, I asked her: "Would you like to enter into an exclusive and committed relationship with me, progressing toward marriage?"  No kidding! Nanci can testify to this.  And her expression was: .  But then she said "yes"!  Nine months later, I asked her to marry me.  She said "yes" again! And the rest, as they say, is history!

Over the years I have come to a greater degree of appreciation for Nanci's giftedness and an increasing respect for her as a woman of God.  She is, without a doubt, the most incredibly beautiful person I know, externally AND internally.  Nanci, more than any woman I have ever met, exemplifies what it means to be real to God and real to yourself.  She points me to Jesus and reminds me of His powerful grace.  She personifies unconditional love to me.   AND she, more than anyone else, makes me LAUGH!

Honey, I want to let the whole world to know how CRAZY I am about you!  How deeply  in LOVE I am with you!  How much I ADORE you!  And what JOY you bring to my life!
